3:00 What is happening at discretemath.com? Steven Rudich, Carnegie Mellon University. This is a public lecture on an elementary topic for all PCMI participants. There will be special tables at lunch tomorrow (in the Birch Garden) for mixed groups of PCMI participants to reflect together on the mathematics and the teaching in Steven’s talk. You can sneak a peek at another example of Steven’s work, "The Pancake Lecture," on the TV placed outside the computer lab this morning.

3:00 The coordination of table algorithms with geometry leading to the creation of continuous exponents: John Wallis and the 17th century experiments that led to the possibility of the calculus, David Dennis, University of Texas at El Paso. There will be special tables at lunch on Thursday (in the Birch Garden) for mixed groups of PCMI participants to discuss the mathematics and the teaching in David’s talk.
Library Books on reserve for PCMI participants in the School of Mathematics Library may not be removed from the library. Reserved books should be read only within the library. Several of the books have been taken from the library and we ask that they be returned immediately.
Nametags! Please wear your nametag every day. PCMI emphasizes interaction among all participants, and nametags help to facilitate this important aspect of our program. We appreciate the cooperation of all PCMI participants.
The shuttle bus schedule is timed according to the clock on the tower of Fuld Hall – we ask that everyone using the shuttle please be aware of the time on the Fuld Hall clock.
Background Questionnaires (found in your welcome packet) should be turned in to the box on the table near the PCMI Message Board (upper level of the Dining Hall). The background questionnaires are important to the process of assessing how well PCMI works, and we appreciate your taking a few minutes to fill it out and submit it.
The Computer Lab is open for general use 12:30 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. Monday through Friday, and all day on weekends. Due to fire code restrictions on the capacity of the combined Dilworth Room space, the lab is closed for general use from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each weekday while the High School Teacher Program is in session. We appreciate your cooperation in this important matter. The lab is located in the Dilworth Room on the lower level of the Dining Hall. Please note that you will need your Institute Access Card in order to get into the Dining Hall after hours.
Lunch Clarification: The following information might help to make the lunch line more efficient for everyone.
Your lunch ticket entitles you to the following:
Important: Cold entrees are in the section of the food line that begins just inside the entrance door where you pick up your tray. If you are planning on choosing a hot entrée, you need not stand in the line that goes past the cold entrées -- you may go directly to the hot entrée section and form a separate line there. Likewise, if you would prefer a sandwich, you may go directly to that section.
PCMI T-Shirts and tote bags are for sale in the PCMI office. T-shirts come in either white or gray, and are $10.00 each. Sizes are S, M, L, XL, and XXL – sizes S and XXL are limited. The tote bags are made of canvas duck, and are $5.00 each. Both T-shirts and tote bags are available in the PCMI office during regular office hours. They will occasionally be sold at lunch time, next to the PCMI message board, and at the pizza parties on July 28 and August 4. Quantities of some items are limited. Note: cash and check only.
All PCMI participants are invited to join a High School Teacher Program Working Group. See list of groups and meeting times on the bulletin board.
The PCMI Office is located at 95 Morse Lane, in the housing complex. This is adjacent to the laundry room and is entered through the door underneath the carport. Office hours are 8:15-5:00 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and 8:15-1:00 on Wednesdays. Phone: 8140 from any house phone or 734-8140 from the outside.
Coffee and Tea are available daily in the Coffee Lounge (mid-level of the Dining Hall) from 9:30-11:30 a.m. There are water fountains in all buildings on the campus.
We ask that no beverages or food be taken into the computer lab or any of the lecture halls or meeting rooms. Thank you!
Weekend and Wednesday afternoon trips and get-togethers are organized on a casual basis by PCMI participants. There are blank sign-up sheets available on the table near the Message Board if you would like to organize an activity.
