Mathematics Education Research Program

Research on the Teaching and Learning of Probability and Statistics.

July 16-23, 2000

Organizers:
Timothy Kelly, Hamilton College
Richard Lehrer, University of Wisconsin

NOTEThe Mathematics Education Research Program will meet only during the first week of the PCMI Summer Session, July 16-23.

The Mathematics Education Research Program is designed to bring together mathematics educators experienced in conducting research on the teaching and learning of mathematics, and in the development of curricula at all educational levels. Each summer the program focuses on a prominent topic in mathematics education. During the summer of 2000 the focus will be on the teaching, learning, and curricula of probability and statistics. This program is designed to complement the High School Teacher Program and the Undergraduate Faculty Program by providing a context for the articulation of research, practice, and curriculum development in mathematics education. To that end, the format will provide ample opportunity for discussion and collaboration among the researchers, the high school teachers, and the college faculty.

Participants in the Mathematics Education Research Program will meet in two formal sessions per day. Under the guidance of selected lead researchers, participants will first develop a consensus report on the status of research and curriculum development in probability and statistics education. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to report on their own completed and proposed research to the others in the group, using the group as a sounding board. Finally, the group will draft a consensus report outlining directions for future research and curriculum development in probability and statistics education, and suggesting collaborations whereby this work might be productively accomplished. Participants in the Mathematics Education Research Program are encouraged to organize small focused working groups, involving participants from the other PCMI programs, in an effort to bring many perspectives to bear in developing and advancing sound research agendas in mathematics education.

Mathematics educators who are engaged in research on the teaching/learning of probability and statistics, or who have developed curricular materials or texts in probability and statistics are encouraged to apply.
