String Theory
June 16-20, 2014
Program Description
From June 16 to June 20, 2014, the Institute for Advanced Study offered the 13th annual Prospects in Theoretical Physics (PiTP) summer program on the Institute campus in Princeton, New Jersey, USA.
PiTP 2014 focused on String Theory. The program was scheduled to last for only one week (instead of the usual two weeks) and to take place in June (instead of the typical July dates) so that it would immediately precede the STRINGS 2014 Conference occurring in Princeton from June 23 to June 27, 2014. As usual, regular participants of PiTP 2014 were advanced graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, and participants were expected to be actively working in String Theory. In considering applications to PiTP 2014, the Committee gave priority to applicants who also were registered participants in STRINGS 2014.
Organizers
The members of the STRINGS 2014 Local Organizing Committee served as organizers for PiTP 2014.
Topics
A partial list of the topics covered at PiTP 2014 is given below:
- "Applications of String Theory" (Steven Gubser, Princeton University)
- "Introduction to Higher Spin AdS/CFT" (Simone Giombi, Princeton University)
- "Topological String Theory" (Hirosi Ooguri, California Institute of Technology)
- "String Compactification" (Martijn Wijnholt, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München)
- "Supersymmetric Quantum Field Theories" (Nathan Seiberg, Institute for Advanced Study)
Other lecturers were: Nima Arkani-Hamed (Institute for Advanced Study), Igor Klebanov (Princeton University), Juan Maldacena (Institute for Advanced Study), Alexander Polyakov (Princeton University), Herman Verlinde (Princeton University), and Edward Witten (Institute for Advanced Study).
Program Schedule
The program schedule can be found by selecting the "Program Schedule" tab at the top of this page.
Important Logistics To Note
*Individuals from IAS, Princeton University or other local institutions who were interested in attending the program as commuting participants were required to submit an application.
*Regular participants were required to be in attendance for the full five days of the program, participating in all lectures and afternoon working sessions. Accepted auditors were allowed to attend on a more flexible basis.
*There was no registration fee charged for participating in the program, however participants were responsible for their own travel expenses.
*Non-local regular participants could arrange for their own local accommodations, if they wished, or they could apply to stay in housing arranged for by the Program. Program housing was in a Princeton University dorm located a short walk from the IAS campus. Accommodations were shared, with semi-private baths.
*Regular PiTP participants who also registered to attend STRINGS 2014 and who elected to stay in program housing were given accommodations in a Princeton dorm for 13 nights (arrival Sunday, June 15 and departure Saturday, June 28) at the subsidized cost of $400 USD. We also were able to admit applicants who only wished to attend PiTP 2014, and the accommodation charge was $200 USD for the five nights of the PiTP program (arrival Sunday, June 15 and departure Friday, June 20). Under extremely special circumstances, additional housing financial assistance was provided.
Accepted auditors were responsible for their own accommodations. They were directed to see the STRINGS 2014 web site for suggestions.
*We provided regular PiTP participants staying in the dorm with all weekday meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) from Monday, June 16 through Friday, June 20 at no additional charge. Meals were served in the Institute dining hall.
Accepted auditors were allowed to purchase meals in the IAS dining hall during the week of PiTP.
