WHAT YOU SHOULD PACK:

We strongly suggest you pack the following clothing and other critical items that would be difficult or expensive to purchase locally:
  • a cell phone (with international calling plan activated, as needed) - there will be NO PHONE SERVICE AVAILABLE IN THE DORMS.
  • a cell phone charger
  • for participants coming from outside of the United States, a power converter and plug adapter that is compatible with the United States' electrical system
  • a pair of sneakers or comfortable walking shoes
  • an umbrella (we often have thunderstorms in June)
  • a sweater/light jacket (the temperature in the lecture hall may be cooler than you prefer)
  • an alarm clock
  • a hairdryer
  • a bath towel
  • a wash cloth

Princeton University will provide you with 1 pillow, 1 pillowcase, 2 sheets, 1 blanket and 2 (small) towels.
The dress code is informal during the Program.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN YOU ARRIVE:

PLEASE REFER TO THE  PiTP-Princeton University Map  ON YOUR ARRIVAL to see the relative locations of the buildings referenced in the Housing Check-In instructions below. Select walking routes have been noted for you as a Red Line (for walking to Scully Hall Dorm from Forbes Dorm) and as a Black Dotted Line (for walking to the IAS Shuttle Stop to catch the shuttle bus on Monday morning).  You may also find it helpful to refer to the PiTP Program Map which gives an alternate view of these same locations, plus more details about the location of the Institute for Advanced Study relative to the University.

Housing Check-In on Sunday, June 15
Participants housed on the campus of Princeton University will have rooms in one of two dorms, Forbes or Scully, both of which are only a short distance from the Princeton (Dinky) Train Station.
 
PRINCETON UNIVERSITY STAFF WILL BE ON HAND ON THE FIRST FLOOR OF FORBES DORM BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 3:00 P.M. AND 8:00 P.M. ON SUNDAY, JUNE 15 TO CHECK YOU IN AND GIVE YOU YOUR DORM KEYCARDS. You will be given a Name Badge Lanyard at check-in that will serve as your lecture hall and meals admittance ticket. Please be certain to wear your badge at all times.

IF YOU ARRIVE ON CAMPUS BEFORE 3:00 P.M., you may collect your dorm keycard at the Public Safety Office on the Princeton University Campus. The Public Safety Office is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is only a short walk from the train station and the dorms. If you can't find the Public Safety Office for any reason and you need to call, their number is +1-609-258-1000. Then please plan to come to check-in at Forbes Dorm between 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. to pick up your Name Badge Lanyard, which will serve as your lecture hall and meals admittance ticket. Please be certain to wear your badge at all times.

IF YOU ARRIVE ON CAMPUS AFTER 8:00 P.M., you may collect your dorm keycard at the Public Safety Office on the Princeton University Campus. The Public Safety Office is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is only a short walk from the train station and the dorms. If you can't find the Public Safety Office for any reason and you need to call, their number is +1-609-258-1000. Then, when you come to the Institute on Monday morning, please plan to come to the Information Desk in Fuld Hall (see Institute campus map for location) to pick up your Name Badge Lanyard, which will serve as your lecture hall and meals admittance ticket. Please be certain to wear your badge at all times.
 
IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT YOUR DORM KEYCARD: please be certain to keep your keycard with you whenever you exit your room. Your keycard will open both the outer doors to the building and your dorm room door. The outer doors to the dorms will remain locked at all times, and room doors automatically lock behind you as they close.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • SMOKING IS NOT PERMITTED IN THE DORMS
  • YOU MAY NOT BRING PETS OR INVITE OVERNIGHT GUESTS TO STAY WITH YOU IN YOUR DORM ROOM
  • YOU WILL BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES TO YOUR DORM ROOM THAT MAY OCCUR DURING YOUR STAY.
  • You will have access to all traditional common areas of Forbes and Scully. Both dorms contain lounges and kitchenettes which may be used by participants.
  • There are some spaces in Forbes, traditionally locked, which may not be used even if unlocked. These are: the black box theater, the library and the dining hall (which will not be functioning during the summer).

Shuttle Bus Service To/From the Institute on June 16-20:
There will be Shuttle Bus Transportation provided between Princeton University and the Institute each morning and evening, Monday - Friday June 16-20, as noted below. The "IAS Shuttle Stop" at Princeton University (where you will catch the bus each morning to bring you to the Institute) will be located on College Road between Alexander Street and University Place (see the PiTP-Princeton University Map). The Shuttle Bus Stop at the Institute (where you will catch the bus each evening to return to Princeton University) will be located immediately in front of Fuld Hall on the Institute Campus (see the Institute campus map).

Instructions for Walking To/From the Institute
If you miss the shuttle bus or just prefer to walk between the Institute and Princeton University, you will find instructions on our web site for "Walking To/From the Institute." It is about a 25-30 minute walk.

Internet Access while in Dorm
Princeton University will offer PiTP participants internet access via the puvisitor network (a free network) while they are staying in the University dorms.

If you have issues connecting to the internet through the Princeton University puvisitor network, you may be required to register your computer at a cost of $30.00 USD. To register your computer and/or to get support with a registered internet connection, contact Jennie Werner, jawerner@princeton.edu.

Laundry in Dorm
There are washers and dryers in the lower level of Forbes and on each floor in Scully that may be used at no charge. Laundry detergent may be purchased at the Princeton University Store (see "Where to Buy" section below).
 
Parking Options for Dorm Residents
If you drive, there is only one lot on the Princeton Campus where you will be allowed to park your car overnight - Lot 32 (see the PiTP-Princeton University Map). We suggest that you may find it most convenient to leave your car parked at Princeton and take the shuttle bus to/from the Institute, but if you prefer to drive between campuses there is free parking at the Institute (see "Parking at the Institute" section below).
 
Telephone Use in Dorm
THERE WILL BE NO PHONE SERVICE AVAILABLE IN THE DORMS. Participants should bring a cell phone, with an activated international calling plan as needed.
 
Access to Princeton University Gymnasium
You will be allowed to buy daily passes for access to the Princeton University Gymnasium. Passes cost $5.00 and may be purchased from the Princeton Conference Services Office located at 71 University Place (if you are at the corner of College Road and University Place, just walk uphill to the first building on your left on University Place). For further information, you can call their office at +1-609-258-6115 between the hours of 8:30am and 4:30pm, Monday - Friday.
 
Where to Buy...food, laundry detergent, toiletries, paper, pens, etc.
There are two stores very close to the dorms where you can buy basic items you might need. The first is the Princeton University Store and the second is the WaWa Convenience Store. Both locations are marked on the Master PiTP Map. The University Store is located at 36 University Place (Telephone: +1-609-921-8500 extension 100). It is open Monday - Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It sells pens, papers, basic toiletries, laundry detergent, makeup, some over the counter medicines, snacks and drinks. The WaWa Store is located at the corner of University Place and Alexander Road (Telephone: +1-609-921-3677), and it is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It sells sandwiches/side items (hot and cold), a limited variety of fruits, drinks and snacks. There is an Automated Teller Machine at the WaWa, as well.

Information Desk on the Institute Campus
There will be an Information Desk located in the Common Room (lobby) of Fuld Hall on the Institute campus (see Institute campus map) where staff members will be on hand Monday-Friday, June 16-20 from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. to answer questions/provide assistance, as needed, or you may call +1-508-603-9766 with your question. You may also send email to the PiTP Team's attention at: pitp@ias.edu.
 
Automated Teller Machines
If you need access to an Automated Teller Machine while on the Institute campus, there is one in the basement of Fuld Hall (see Institute campus map). PLEASE NOTE: you should plan to use this machine only for small withdrawals for unexpected expenses during your stay; it will NOT be able to support large cash withdrawals.  In addition, it will only allow withdrawals if your financial institution is a member of one of the participating networks listed on the front of the machine, and please be aware that your bank may charge additional fees for this service, including currency conversion fees, where applicable.
 
(There also is an Automated Teller Machine at the WaWa convenience store near the dorms. The location of the WaWa is marked on the PiTP Program Map).
 
Computing Use while on the Institute Campus
Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop to the program (but if you cannot bring your laptop or you experience problems with your laptop during the PiTP program there are two desktop computers set up for public use in the Bloomberg Hall Common Room (lobby) on the Institute campus - see Institute campus map). Students coming from outside of the United States should be sure to bring a power converter and plug adapter that is compatible with the United States' electrical system, so that you are able to re-charge your laptop battery.
 
Use of your laptop (or other personal computing device) on the Institute network requires completion of a small registration procedure. It is not necessary (or even possible) to register before your visit.  The Registration Page will appear automatically when you launch a web browser at the Institute.  If you have any difficulty, please follow the instructions posted here: http://regdhcp.net.ias.edu/reg/.
 
The Institute campus, excluding the lecture hall (Wolfensohn Hall), offers wireless service.
 
EMERGENCY INFORMATION while on the Institute Campus
 
POLICE-FIRE-MEDICAL: DIAL 9-911 from any Institute campus phone.*
 
If an individual has stopped breathing or a heart attack is suspected, AFTER calling 911:

The Institute has placed Automated External Difibrillators (AEDs) in several locations around campus, and placed on the side of each box is a list of trained users. AED locations include (see Institute campus map):

Institute Public Safety Officer: An Institute Public Safety Officer is on duty each weeknight and all weekend long. They may be reached by dialing extension 5460 from any phone on the Institute campus (dial +1-609-947-5940 if calling from a cell phone).
 
* If you dial 911 in error, please do not hang up. Wait for the emergency dispatcher to come on the line and explain that it was a misdial. If you hang up before speaking with the dispatcher, Princeton Emergency Services will be obligated to send a police car to your location to investigate the call.
 
Fax Service
There is a fax machine in the Reception Office on the first floor of Fuld Hall (see Institute campus map). The incoming fax number is +1-609-924-8399. If you are expecting to receive a fax during the PiTP program, please make sure that it is addressed to you "in care of: Susan Higgins," and please note that faxes received in the evening will not be able to be given to you until the following business day. Please do NOT have faxes sent to you any later than Thursday evening, June 19th. The Receptionist also is available to send faxes out for you weekdays between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. A fax cover page must accompany all requests for fax transmittals; a supply of the cover pages may be found at the Reception desk. There is a charge for outgoing faxes.
 
Fuld Hall Common Room on the Institute Campus
The Common Room in Fuld Hall (see Institute campus map) is open to PiTP participants 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The PiTP Information Desk will be located in this room. In addition, there is an excellent selection of domestic and foreign newspapers and periodicals in this room; you are welcome to enjoy these publications, but please note that many of them are marked with a request that they NOT be removed from the Common Room.

Medical Information

 
In case of a life-threatening medical emergency: see EMERGENCY INFORMATION SECTION

NON-CRITICAL CARE: If you fall ill or experience a minor injury while on the Institute campus and it is a weekday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., if you do not need immediate emergency care, you may consult with the Human Resources Staff in Fuld Hall (see Institute campus map) (office #102; dial extension 8243 or 8245 from any campus phone or +1-609-734-8243 or 8245 from a cell phone), who will be able to explain the medical treatment options available through the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro Occupational Health office.  PLEASE NOTE: The Medical Center's appointment hours end at 3:00 p.m., so you may not be able to be scheduled for an appointment until the next business day.

 
PLEASE ALSO NOTE: The University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro Occupational Health office does not deal with any insurance companies, so you are advised to bring a credit card with you, as you will be responsible for payment at the time of services.   They will issue a receipt which you can submit to your insurance company if your plan is such that it will reimburse for out-of-network providers.  Please see http://www.ias.edu/campus/hr/announce#UrgentCare for further information and a schedule of fees negotiated by the Institute.
 
For assistance in the evening or when you are on the campus of Princeton, your options are:
 
#1 Princeton Primary and Urgent Care Center  in Princeton Junction is open Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to Noon. They are located at 707 Alexander Road and they can be reached by calling +1-609-919-0009.  Further information about this practice and the insurances they accept may be found on their website.  Walk-ins are welcome, but it is recommended you call them before you go. The Center is about a 10-minute car ride away. See the "Taxis" section below for taxi company phone numbers. PLEASE NOTE: In case they are not able to bill your private insurance plan directly, or do not accept your insurance, you should bring a credit card with you so you can pay at the time of service.
 
#2 Saint Peter’s Urgent Care Center in Skillman (North of Princeton at 1378 Route 206, Suite 11, Skillman, NJ in the Village Shoppes at Montgomery)  is open from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. They can be reached by calling +1-609-497-4597. No appointments are necessary, but it is recommended you call them before you go. Further information about this practice, directions, and the insurances they accept may be found on their website. The Center is about a 15-minute car ride away. See the "Taxis" section below for taxi company phone numbers.  PLEASE NOTE: In case they are not able to bill your private insurance plan directly, or do not accept your insurance, you should bring a credit card with you so you can pay at the time of service. 
 
#3 Minute Clinic at CVS Pharmacy Princeton State Highway 206 [located inside CVS/pharmacy #5871 at 881 State Highway 206, Princeton (+1-609-683-3680); THIS IS NOT THE CVS ON NASSAU STREET IN THE CENTER OF PRINCETON] Clinic hours are Monday - Friday, 8:30 am to 7:30 pm, Saturday 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, and Sunday 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. Minute Clinic is a walk-in medical clinic staffed by nurse practitioners and physician assistants who provide treatment for common family illnesses and injuries. Patients are responsible for either their insurance co-pay or the price listed on the Minute Clinic menu of fees. If you have insurance, please contact your insurance company before your visit to verify coverage, or if you are uninsured or prefer to pay out-of-pocket, please be certain to bring sufficient cash or a credit card with you. PLEASE NOTE: the last patient sign-in at the registration kiosk is 15 minutes prior to the clinic closing, and the clinic will stop accepting new sign-ins earlier if the number of patients registered and waiting to be seen extends beyond the clinic closing time. Please also note that practitioners take a daily required lunch break from approximately 2:00 to 3:00 pm weekdays and 1:00 to 1:30 pm on Saturday and Sunday. More information on services and fees can be found on their website. The Minute Clinic at CVS Pharmacy Princeton is about a 10-minute car ride away. See the "Taxis" section below for taxi company phone numbers.
 
# 4 The closest Hospital Emergency Room is located at the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro's Center for Emergency Care  They are located at One Plainsboro Road in Plainsboro, and they can be reached by calling +1-609-853-7700. PLEASE NOTE: an Emergency Room visit can be very expensive, and any costs incurred will be the responsibility of the participant or his/her insurance company. You should bring with you your medical insurance card and information, as well as a credit card, if you decide to visit the Emergency Room.
 
AVOIDING LYME DISEASE: Exposure to deer ticks can be a serious problem, as they may carry Lyme disease.  It is helpful to avoid sitting in grassy areas or walking around without shoes.  Lyme disease typically is first noticeable as a bulls-eye rash. If you feel feverish, sore, or have general flu symptoms, check yourself for any signs of this rash.  As Lyme disease can be present even without a visible rash, however, if you have flu-like symptoms, you may wish to consult a physician.  You can find more detailed information about Lyme disease at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyme_disease
 
LOCAL PHARMACIES: The Princeton Pharmacy is located on the first floor of the University Store, just up the street from the Princeton Train Station (36 University Place, +1-609-924-4545). Its hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The Princeton Pharmacy is not open on Sundays. There also is a CVS Pharmacy in downtown Princeton (172 Nassau Street, at the corner of Washington Road, +1-609-683-1337); the store is open 7 days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., however the pharmacy section opens at 8:00 a.m. on Monday - Friday and has reduced hours on the weekends - it is open Saturdays 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Sundays 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
 
Messages and Notices
Three PiTP bulletin boards will be positioned around the Institute Campus (in Fuld Hall Common Room, in the Tent on the Lawn behind Fuld Hall, and in Wolfensohn Hall Lobby) (see Institute campus map). Messages to participants, notices about special activities, etc. will be posted there. Please be certain to check the bulletin boards a few times every day. Program schedule changes or other important announcements also will be posted on our web site's Schedule page.
 
Parking at the Institute
Participants will find free parking in Lots A and B on Campus (see Institute campus map).  No parking sticker is required.
 
Schedule of Program Events
All lectures will be given in Wolfensohn Hall with overflow seating in nearby Simonyi Lecture Hall. Any unexpected and last minute changes to the schedule will be posted on the Schedule web page and a flyer placed on the PiTP bulletin boards.
 
SPECIAL EVENTS:
  • There will be a sale of Institute souvenir merchandise on Friday, June 20 from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM in the upper level of the Institute Dining Hall (see Institute campus map). Items can be purchased only with cash or a check (in U.S. Dollars), and will be available only at this time during the week of PITP.
  • Although the PiTP Program officially ends with lunch on Friday, June 20, all participants are welcome to attend the showing of the movie "Particle Fever" at 3:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon in Wolfensohn Hall (see Institute campus map).
